"On earth, facing the sky, head in the clouds."

Josmeyer Millésime 2019

Our head is in the air to try to decode the meanders of the sky and weather. To try to see more clearly. Facing the sky, we believe in our luck and savour it bites after bites. 2019 begins under good auspices. Despite a late frost early April and a cold weather until mid-May, the vine resists. It lazes and refines the beauty of its leaves and bunches of grapes in the making. But shadow is threatening, or rather the sun. From the first days of June, it warms up, get in shape and adjusts its blows with temperatures rising  to 32°. A saving rain of 43 ml falls on June 15.
But the heat comes back right after. A brutal heat ( 40°) that takes hold of the throat and oppresses the limbs.

July. The sun burns without compromise. The heat is continuous, without periods, commas or brackets. Powerless despite the chamomile herbal teas designed to help the vine to better withstand this endless heat wave. We are watching the desolate spectacle of the vineyard showing the first signs of weakness. Of thirst. The leaves lengthen and retract on the sides. The grapes fold back on themselves. They seem to want to hide behind the leaves to escape the sun's inhuman face. Some of them are burned.

We are waiting for the rain. Call upon it when we wake up and continue as the hours go by. Look at the sky and curse it for being so shamelessly blue.

Only one obsession: water.
Only one truth: water.

27th of July. At least !! RAIN !! A gift in three parts like a waltz (6, 21 and 22 ml). And it is true that I feel like dancing ;to scream with joy! The vine is no longer in apnea. It's catching its breath and so am I.

August : The vine is slowly recovering. The heat fades, the rain repairs and heals. The good weather returns around August 20th. Life seems sweet. We take the first samples at the beginning of September and decide to do a test on September 4 on two plots of Pinot Auxerrois.

A little jump before the big jump on September 12. The pace is accelerating. Temperatures are around 30°. The sun is at its peak. Believe in our instincts and go for it! The grapes are perfect and the days are very long. The objective is to preserve the maximum acidity in Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Objective achieved. The juices are structured and the acidity is long and fine.

The harvest continues without any break. The weather is uncertain but the rain spares us. The Rieslings mature their voices before offering us their songs. A light botrytis pearls on a few berries. The yields are low (average of 40 hl /ha) but the juices are magnificent in their precision.
We finish the harvest in style on Tuesday, October 8 with the Riesling Grand Cru Hengst.

With arms wide open, we welcome these new lives that pulsate around us. They are strong and fragile. Temperamental and terribly moving. Through them, we relive the journey of a year, filled with anger, doubts and wild hopes. We fully appreciate our luck because despite the ups and downs, our wines are there, very much alive, nestled in their old tanks. Their presence awakens the cellar from its summer calm and illuminates it. It is high time to welcome their Light.

"The time has come for the passers of light
And on each path we will paint
Suns with orange hues
And moons as light as a child's laughter."
